Campsite location

For more information about the campsite, please see here.

The campsite we use is an independent 4 star site owned and run by a local Ardeche family. It is located on the bank of the Ardeche river between the village of Salavas and the town of Vallon Pont d’Arc. Being only a 20 min stroll into Vallon and a 10 min drive from the famous Pont d’Arc, the campsite is ideally situated for exploring the Ardeche gorge and the local area.

Facilities

All pitches are shaded and separated by hedges. They also have access to water points and electricity (extension cord may be necessary). The campsite borders the Ardeche river and there is direct access down to the water.

The campsite has a restaurant/bar; swimming pool; small shop and an area provided where you can BBQ as these are not allowed on the campsite pitches.

Please note that, in France, no beach shorts are allowed in a public pool and you must wear ‘speedo’ style swimming trunks.

The guided river trip is included in the River Package and covers the full 32km of the Gorges de l’Ardeche. It consists of two days paddling with an overnight camp in the gorge itself. There are 30 rapids during the descent which are separated by long flat sections of river with spectacular 1000ft cliffs towering above you on either side. This fully immersive experience is suitable for all and the perfect introduction to white water as it allows you to absorb the stunning scenery and wildlife at a relaxed and leisurely pace.

Our expert British guide is there to help you whatever your level or previous experience. Whether it’s your first time in a kayak or whether you’re a seasoned paddler, your safety and enjoyment is our primary concern and we’ll do everything we can to ensure your experience of the Ardeche is one that you’ll remember with a smile for years to come.

The minimum age to go down the Gorge is 7 years old and everyone must be able to swim 25m and be water confident.

The itinerary

We typically meet at 10.30am in Vallon Pont d’Arc on day one of the river trip.

After a brief introduction, you’re straight into your boat and onto the river. After practicing your paddling technique on a few fun rapids, we will stop for lunch on a small beach near the Pont d’Arc, the largest natural arch in Europe, a UNESCO world heritage site and a beautiful spot to relax.

In the afternoon we continue on our journey into the gorge, arriving at the bivouac site in the heart of the nature reserve by around 6pm. After putting up tents we will gather at the BBQ to wind down, cook some food and enjoy the spectacular night sky (seriously, the sky is BIG in the Ardèche!). On day two, after breakfast, we continue our journey through the gorge, navigating the remaining rapids and stopping for some rock jumps whenever you feel the urge! After the river trip, we will be returned back to the starting point, arriving in Vallon by around 6-6.30pm.

The overnight camp

Nothing tops off the experience of paddling through the Nature Reserve quite like sleeping out under the stars, surrounded by sheer cliffs and the sounds of the Gorge. Don’t worry though, because, although basic, the bivouac site does have facilities such as toilets, showers, a BBQ site (with charcoal provided) and access to drinking water – so, you won’t be completely roughing it!

Camping equipment is included (tents, sleeping bags and ground mats) and will be provided to you when we meet for the river trip. Any camping equipment will need to go in the waterproof barrels provided along with anything else you will be bringing with you (spare clothes, food etc).

The boats

The boats we use are sit-on-top kayaks and are available in singles or doubles. They are well designed to help protect you on the rapids and greatly reduce the chance of entrapment. Their specific design allows the waterproof barrel to be securely attached and the boats are self-emptying should you capsize. Buoyancy aids, paddles, 55l barrels (1 per person) and boats are all included in the price.

We can also provide trips in traditional open canoes but prior canoeing experience is required. Please contact us to check availability as we have a limited number of boats.

Where to meet

The map on your right shows the location of where we meet to start all our guided river trips. There is a large car park where you can leave your car for the two days whilst you are on the river. You will be returned here after your trip.

You can click the directions button to get detailed instructions from wherever you are coming from or save the location in your Google maps.

Please note that alcohol is not allowed at the bivouac site.

For more information about the river trip, please see here.

For all our River Package holidays, you are also able to include some additional activities if you would like to. This will enable you to create a bespoke multi-activity programme tailored to your requirements. Just select your chosen activities when placing your booking.

These activities are booked through a local provider who provides all equipment and the guides. These are the best guides in the region and they all speak good English. The activities cost £50 per person per half-day session (3hrs). Options include canyoning, caving, via-ferrata, and climbing.

The climbing activity is located very close to your accommodation and the caving is a 30 min drive down the gorge. However, please note that the canyoning and via-ferrata activities both require a drive of just over an hour as they are located further up in the Ardèche mountains.

Please note: You will be required to get yourselves to the activity meeting locations but directions will be provided.

The minimum age for climbing, caving and canyoning is 7 yrs old. For via-ferrata the minimum age is 10yrs old.

For more information about the additional activities, please see our full list of activities.
